  18. Berlin Philharmonic voted by secret ballot on a replacement for
  19. the legendary Herbert von Karajan, they bypassed such stars as
  20. the New York Philharmonic's Zubin Mehta and La Scala's Riccardo
  21. Muti. The winner of the prestigious post is Claudio Abbado, 56.
  22. The Milan-born conductor, a professorial type who favors
  23. corduroy and cardigans, pronounced himself "profoundly honored."
  24. The busy maestro will continue as the music director of the
  25. state opera in Vienna, where he lives with Russian violinist
  26. Viktoria Mullova, 29.
